Care & repair

Check a canvas tote before washing it

Canvas describes fabric, not permission to put every finished bag in the washing machine. Inspect the whole construction first.

A plain canvas tote with inner care label turned out beside a small bowl of cool water, no washing in progress until label is checked.

Empty it completely

Before deciding how to wash a tote, remove everything from the main compartment and each small pocket. Shake out loose debris over a suitable surface, then inspect the bottom corners. A forgotten paper receipt, pen or coin can create a new problem during cleaning. Remove detachable accessories when the bag's instructions allow it.

Find the care label or the maker's guidance. Some canvas totes are washable; others specify spot cleaning. The fabric name alone cannot settle the question because the bag may also contain a lining, stiffening, leather trim, metal hardware or a printed design with different limits.

Inspect the places water will reach

Look inside as well as outside. A rigid base insert may need removal, or it may be sewn in and unsuitable for immersion. Check whether dark straps sit against a pale body and whether there are damaged seams. Do not assume that a bag which looks simple on the front has a simple construction throughout.

If the maker permits washing, use the stated temperature, method and drying instructions. Avoid borrowing a routine from another canvas bag, even one from the same brand. A soft unlined promotional tote and a structured carrying bag can behave differently when fully wet.

Check the decoration before pretreating stains. Scrubbing across a transfer or embroidery can create damage that is more noticeable than the original mark. Test a compatible cleaning method in a concealed area and let it dry before treating a visible section. A wet test can hide a colour change that appears only later.

Give drying the same care

After permitted cleaning, support the bag's shape without wringing it forcefully. Straighten the straps and seams gently. Follow the recommended drying position and keep it away from heat sources that the maker has not approved. Do not put it into a dryer merely because the canvas feels sturdy.

Make sure the lining, base corners and strap attachments are dry before storage or use. These thicker areas can retain moisture after the broad front panel feels dry. Leave the bag open where air can circulate, with enough space around it rather than folded beneath other damp items.

If the bag has no instructions and is valuable, structured or made from mixed materials, ask the maker before full washing. A limited, careful spot clean may be more appropriate than immersion, but it still needs to suit the finish. The aim is to remove dirt while preserving the useful shape and decoration, not to prove that every object made from cotton can survive the same laundry cycle.
